1. Introduction to Southampton Hockey Club

About SHC
We are a large, friendly, family orientated and sociable hockey club, based in the heart of Southampton. We have an ethos of ensuring that hockey is available for all, and we aim to provide that to every member of our club.

Here at SHC we offer 6 Men's teams,5 Ladies teams and a thriving Juniors section for a range of abilities and age groups. We also look to enter tournaments when we can, participate in mixed hockey and organise social events including Club Days, BBQ's, quiz evenings and annual Dinner Dances to encourage interaction between the various teams in the club and grow the social side of the club.

This year we welcomed Alex Cameron-Hollyer as head of coaching to the club. Alex is a former National League player and experienced coach. This grows on the experience we already have in the club and brings a new focus to our training sessions.

In previous years, the Ladies 1XI team enjoyed a couple of seasons in the National League, our Men's 1XI team became the National Vase Champions in 2017, and our Men's 3's also won the Hampshire Open Trophy that year.

Under the direction of our previous Head Coach, the late Roger Merry, SHC has a well-established youth section for boys and girls of all ages. In honour of Roger Merry, we hold an annual tournament (The Roger Merry Minis Tournament) at the Southampton Sports Centre which sees clubs from all over the county coming together. The Junior section is now under the management of Sue Merry, who has had an incredible hockey career, having playing for England and Wales for many years. The Junior section helps young players get a feel for hockey, learn the rules of the game, and develop skills in a fun, friendly and safe manner. We have kit available to help new players who have never picked up a stick before.

As we enter the 2021/22 season SHC are looking to reinvigorate ourselves as a club, and are aiming to offer more opportunities for members to play, socialise and have fun together as a club.
