Report for 2nd February 2002

I have lent a hockey video called the Tactical Game to somebody. If he/she still has it could they return to me asap.

Thanks

Ladies

The first had a disappointing result against Horsham, going down 1 - 0. With Horsham desperate for points their game was about not giving anything away and capitalising on their chances. Two yellows and a green was the result. Southampton created good scoring chances with several just going outside the post or being saved by an in-form Horsham keeper. Twenty minutes into the game Southampton lost Skipper, Nicky Page with a turned ankle thus reducing the squad to 11 fit players. Just after half time Horsham had a purple patch and moved the ball around creating several good breaks, from one of which they scored and then went on to hit the post. Southampton pressed hard for the equaliser but could not make the break through. We remain fourth in the league.

The seconds had a bad start to their match with Eastleigh with the GK arriving late and the game starting with a kicking back. Agreement to start the game after a delay of twenty minutes was reneged upon and Eastleigh claimed the points. The matter will now be referred to the league committee. Southampton went on to win the game 3 - 0 with goals coming from Hollie Nutt (ball passed from Anna Skelton at the top of the D and roofed), Kay Whittingham forced the ball home in a goal mouth melee' and skipper Maggs Ingram scored from a neat short corner routine.
LEAGUE POS 6/10

The threes went 1 - 0 up through Beth Davis against bottom of table Farnborough but were checked with two Farnborough goals midway through the game. Sabrina Black equalised for Southampton late in the game and keeper Lauren Curry pulled off a penalty save just before time to give Southampton a point.
LEAGUE POS 7/10

Southampton 4's - 0 Andover 1's - 3 Southampton 4th Xl are 6th and Andover 1st Xl are 2nd in the league and pushing for promotion - a slight difference between the teams!!! but it has to be said that Southampton won the first half in terms of possession and determination although Andover went into half time one goal up scored on the whistle.
It was apparent from the way Andover started the second half, that they had been worried by the strength and determination of Southampton in the first half and were keen to re-establish themselves as the better side scoring another two goals to take the match 3-0, a repeat of the scoreline when the two teams met in the first half of the season.
Since Christmas it should be noted that the 4th Xl have either bettered or equalled the results from the first half of the season. This has resulted in the climb from a relegation position to mid table mediocrity, a position we will be happy with at the end of our first season in div 3 and as the highest placed fourth eleven in the league.
Saturday sees us playing Aldershot & Farnham who were level with us on points before yesterdays matches, so it should be a close game (0-0 before Christmas).
LEAGUE POS 7/10
Dee Matthews

The Fifths continued their winning streak overwhelming Gosport Threes by 5 - 0. Southampton saw four go in during the first half with Karina Christiansen making claims to all but !!! Amy Sheehan was on hand to finish off a fine attack in the dying seconds.
LEAGUE POS 2/9

Men

A disappointing performance by the Ones allowed Haslemere to take the honours in this Hampshire division one game. Gary Watts taking the chance on his recall. Final score 1 - 3.
LEAGUE POS 8/11

The seconds returned to winning form and gained some revenge when they defeated Haslemere Twos 3 - 2. Chris Stokes scoring.
LEAGUE POS 7/10

It is the second time I have watched the University Third team this season and I continue to be surprised by their lowly league position. They played some excellent hockey as the overcame Southampton Thirds 3 - 0. Promotion is still on the cards for Southampton but their lead ot the head of the Open league Premier division has been whittled away recently.
LEAGUE POS 2/10

Fourth's game Off.
LEAGUE POS 7/10

Southampton 5th XI Vs Southsea 4th XI
Southampton 5ths started well against Southsea, and scored two goals by the end of the first half. The first coming from Mich Foulds, after a good turning strike in front of goal, and Will Ferguson with a powerful hit, finishing an excellent run from Simon Brownlie.
The second half, however, left something to be desired…. Southampton seemed to fall apart and Southsea took advantage of our relaxed position and quickly scored from the pushback. After an "interesting" tackle from Paul Bunyan, Southampton conceded a penalty stroke which sadly dented Colin Mundays great record and put Southsea on level terms. Some heart stopping moments followed but Southampton didn't seem to produce any of the fluent hockey that has been seen in recent weeks. Hopefully a rematch with Winchester next week will see a return to the hockey we all know and love!!
Final Score: 2-2

The Otters also returned to winning with a 4 - 0 over University of Portsmouth 3s. Danny Morgan (3) and ?? .
LEAGUE POS 7/12

The Masters run in Division one of the Wessex Masters league looks in jeopardy as they continued their disappointing run with a 1 - 2 defeat by Barnes. Paul Meacher scoring.

The Vets were jubilant as they overran table topping Haslemere. To be fair Haslemere were not at full strength, under estimating Southampton's hunger for victory and recent run of good form. John Spencer ruined his goal a season reputation by getting three (SC specialist), Bill Stokes (2) and Pete Terry helping out. Order of scoring Stokes, Terry, Spencer(2), Stokes Spencer. HT 2 - 0.

Sunday

The Under 19 girls first team keep up their challenge for the Championship with a 6 - 0 victory over Wimborne, who fielded several of their ladies First team. Charlottes, Leatham (2) and Gallagher getting on the scoresheet, along with Beth Davies in the first half and Beth going on to complete her hat trick in the second.

The Under 19s Seconds went 2 - 0 down to New Milton but were back on even terms by half time with goals from Clare Salter and Kerry Brown. A second half saw both sides playing some good hockey but it was NM that grabbed the goals to take the points.

The Under 14 boys were given an early shock by Basingstoke, going one down before getting into gear and going onto win 10 - 1 in the Hampshire Cup. Goals coming from Sam Hiscock (2), Will Legge (2), James Please (2), David Stokes, Ollie Knight, Robert O'Brien and Alex Georgiopolus.

The Hampshire Under 15 girls for which Southampton Juniors Caroline Neil, Kirsten Cox, Katrina Rees and former GK Claire Lewis play beat Middlesex 2 - 0 with Kate Morgan and Nickola Maddock scoring but lost to potential champions Surrey 1 - 2 with Sarah Nicholls scoring.

The Hampshire Under 14 girls which includes Louis Jeffcoate, Imogen Storm, Catlyn Adams, Jenny Bennett Britton, Frances Bakewell and Hannah Jenvey had two good wins in their County Championship beating Surrey 1 - 0 and Middlesex 7 - 0.

The Men's Ones lifted their game to beat Yateley 3 - 1 in the Hampshire Cup. Scorers were Kelvin Wyatt, Gary Watts and Rowan Ayres (via foot/stick) .
