Report for Weekend 1st December 2001

Ladies

West Witney started in a storming fashion and caused some concern early in the game. However the Southampton defence managed to hold them at bay, thanks to the solid defence of Dunham, Bannatyne, Jarman, Page and White.
Southampton came into the game and forced several short corners and from the third Julia Fabrizi got back on the score sheet. Witney started well after the break and equalised after five minutes from open play and then went ahead from a short corner. With 15 seconds remaining Southampton were awarded a long corner which was passed to Sue Crowley, who turned the Witney defender inside the circle to win a short corner. The first effort was blocked by a foot and the resulting corner was converted by Fabrizi to earn a well deserved point. Sophie Mitchell made her first team debut showing good skills and composure on the ball.

Second eleven keeper Charlotte Page was ruled out following a night in hospital and Third team keeper Lauren Curry was drafted in as replacement. However she twisted her knee during the warm up and despite playing on for most of the game eventually retired hurt. Charlotte Gallagher putting on the helmet for the last quarter. Unfortunately this meant that the thirds were also a GK down.
With both sides playing second (Aldershot & Farnham) and first (Havant) in the league getting points was always going to be difficult, the seconds going down 0 - 3 and the Thirds 0 - 4. Both sides worked hard to stay in the games but with limited success.

Looking forward to challenging game against division leaders Havant 3's, the 4th Xl had an unexpected disadvantage when their keeper was required at short notice by the 2's. Undeterred Dee Lehan-Matthews donned the ill fitting helmet (having tried all from Roger's store) to stand between the posts. Havant pressed the Southampton defence from the off only to become very frustrated at being unable to penetrate the 4 K's and Dee. Hampered by the helmet (and the relentless Havant onslaught) Dee and the defence were unable to prevent Havant forging ahead by 4-0 at half time. The second half saw a revived Southampton team claw back one goal courtesy of Karen Robinson (the 5th K on the team sheet). Havant then added another to their total running out winners 5-1. Lets us not forget that Southampton drew the second half - unfortunately, there are no points attached to this. Saturday sees the 4's playing Southampton Uni 2 (Charlotte Morris's team) in the last league fixture before Christmas. We aim to go out on a win but only time will tell.
Match Reporter - Dee Matthews

The Fifths clashed with second in table, Gosport and lost to a single goal in a balanced game which saw chances fall to both sides.

Men

The first eleven met with in-form Trojans and received a lesson in consistency as Trojans produced the greater amount of controlled short hockey. Southampton solitary goal coming from Kelvin Wyatt from a short corner. Final result 1 - 5.

See here for the 2nd XI match report.

The Thirds met with the fourths in the league and after a close game the Thirds edged it 2 - 1.

See here for the 5th XI match report.

Southampton 6XI came up against runaway leaders Salisbury Swifts and were spurred on that Salisbury had lost to Hamble the previous week...

In a tough game where chances were few for both sides, the battle was obvious from the start would be in midfield. Southampton 6XI, do like to concede early goals and Saturday was no exception - however unlucky it was. From a shot by the Salisbury captain was saved by keeper Ryan Edwards and should have been easily cleared but the ball rebounded off the pads and into the goal..
After the break, Southampton stringed together pass after pass and looked to control the midfield and the reward came halfway through the second half when a short corner was conceded by Salisbury.. From the resulting short corner Dave Jackson popped up at the far post and deflected the ball into the goal...
A final goal from Julian Powis, after a good run and shot late on ensured Southampton were victorious and remain in touch with the leaders.
The 6XI remain 3rd and 3 points off top spot.

Despite playing the better hockey The Otters fell to Gosport 2s by 3 - 5.

The Vets visited Barnes and were unlucky not to return home with any points. Skipper Keith Wyatt was pleased with the work rate and general performance of the team and was especially pleased to see Pete Terry making his return from injury. Barnes opened the scoring only for Keith Finch to equalise before half time. Some interesting umpiring produced concern in the Southampton ranks and Barnes scored the winner midway into the second half.

The Master had a small mix up with pitches in their match with Trojans. Having turned up for a 4:30 game at 10am both teams quickly moved across town to Trojans pitch and played out a 1 - 1 draw with John Morris scoring for Southampton.

Sunday

The Men's first team had a successful trip to the Midlands where they played Leicester Wesley in the National Vase. A better team performance saw Southampton take a 2- 0 lead when Chris Stokes deflected a right wing cross and Kelvin Wyatt scored from a short. Wesley scored late in the game with a deflected short corner.

The under 19 girls first team enjoyed an 8 - 1 win over New Milton. Scorers were Charlotte Gallagher, Helen Carter.

The seconds took a while to break through the Andover defence but eventually saw their resolve rewarded. Good inter play resulted in Felicity Robinson score at the far post. She added a second before half time and Jessica Goddard finished off a right wing attack when she made the final score 3 - 0. Late GK replacement, Avni Sheth was called upon to make few saves but each was crucial.

The under 19 Thirds were also without a goal keeper but managed a 2 - 2 draw with Alton. Abby Purkiss getting both goals.

Under 14 girls 'A'team V City of Portsmouth. (Watch these names)

Louise Jeffcoate was in control in goal, and made 4 or 5 good clearances when needed.
Jenny Bennett-Brittain was like a rock in defence playing sweeper - didn't miss a single tackle and made some great clearances.
Kitty tackled everything in sight.
Holly put in a huge amount of effort, and tackled well.
Sarah Brown never gave up on chasing down attackers, and moved the ball out wide exactly as she was asked to do
Jo Slade played out of position at centre half, distributed the ball well, and supported the attacks while always getting back to help in defence - very good performance.
Georgie Torlot played out of position at right half, defended really well, and made some brilliant passes up to the right wing (which made two of our goals)
Chrissy Stoke battled hard at left half and concentrated on moving the ball up the left wing
Sarah Bentley did exactly what she was asked to do on the right wing and a a result scored her two goals - she is gaining in confidence and I think moving a lot faster than she was last year.
Jilly motivated the others superbly, always kept her position, and that really helped the others keep the structure going. (Her second goal was superb, and finished off a great move of about 4 consecutive passes starting in our own half)
Hannah Jenvey had the left wing completely tied down, and played to her usual very high standard.

The Southampton under 14 'B' team went one down to Winchester first team after being under pressure for the start of this game. Southampton worked hard to stay in the game and eventually played themselves into some good scoring chances but could not beat the Under 14 Hampshire goal keeper. Final score 1 - 0.

The under 14 boys second team went down to two early goals against Romsey first team.
