Report for Weekend 10th November 2001

Ladies

Apologies to Kirsten Cox, who plays for Hampshire under 15s and was regretfully left off the list last week.

A late goal courtesy of a Bex Sharr run and JO Knight shot was not enough to save Southampton First eleven in their latest league match with Wimbledon, going down 1 - 2.
The game started with a twenty minute pressurisation of the Southampton defence by a quick running Wimbledon attack. Midway through Wimbledon scored to go one up. However Southampton eventually came to grips with the Wimbledon line up and took the game into the Wimbledon half, creating some good scoring chances with two goal line clearances keeping Wimbledon ahead.
Wimbledon again made a good start after the half time break and scored from a short corner. Southampton continued to pressurise but only had the solitary Knight goal to show at the end. However Southampton remain third in the league.

The seconds eventually secured all three points when they defeated Farnborough 3 - 0 to move out of the bottom two. Sophie Mitchell, Kay Whittington and Skipper Maggs Ingram getting on the scoresheet.

The Thirds were well on the way to three points against Fleet with a Beth Davies goal but a late flurry from Fleet resulted in an equaliser.

The Fourths earned a valuable point against Aldershot and Farnham, who are second in division three. A final result of 0 - 0.

The fifths started with their backs to the wall against Gregarians, with stand in goal keeper, Danielle Stanton making two crucial early saves. Southampton managed to work the game to their favour with Sandy Lewis earning herself a hat trick for a 3 - 0 win. This keeps them in second place behind Havant, who they meet next week.

Men

Southampton toppled table toppers Wimborne Wayfarers 3 - 2 with a team performance. Relying on controlling high flying Wayfarers, Southampton twice went behind in the first half only for Richard Watts to equalise following good build up and ball possession. With both sides vying for advantage it was a solitary Kelvin Wyatt second half goal split the sides at the end.

A last touch cost Southampton seconds a share of the points against London wayfarers (2nd in league). With the score at 1 - 1 (Freckleton scoring for Southampton), the seconds were ticking away when Wayfarers threw in one last attack during which a lose ball found its way into the Southampton net.

Without their skipper (Mark Day - international duty) the thirds met with Winchester fives, who just pipped them for second place last season and currently sit at the top the league. A tense game resulted in Southampton taking a 1 - 0 advantage at the final whistle.

The Otters ran out 4 - 1 victors against Camberley 3S. Rhobet Williams & Alex Tong scoring in first half, James Fewtrell and Robert O'Brien securing the win before sloppy defending let Camberley score a consolation with a few minutes to go.

The Sixth eleven were forced to follow on twice in their match with Trojans Terriers. Trojans' early 1 - 0 lead was cancelled out by Julian Powis and the 2-1 lead by Paul Smith.

A difficult weekend for the Masters and Vets. The Vets lost 1 - 3 in their league match with City of Oxford with Bill Stokes scoring before entertaining Milton Keynes in the National Cup and losing 7 - 2. Milton Keynes fielding three first team players never gave Southampton a real chance to get into the game going 4 goals up by half time. Goals from Bill Stokes and The Masters falling by the single goal against United Services.

Sunday

Hampshire U19 Boys' squad won this week end: 4-0 vs Oxfordshire and 2-1 against Buckinghamshire. Results so far played 6, won 5, drawn 1. A win in the last game against Berkshire in two weeks time will assure Hampshire the South Championship.
