Report for Weekend 27th October 2001

Ladies

An electrifying performance of hockey was on display at Southampton sports Centre when Southampton met with Dulwich in the South league. Played at a cracking pace the match ended with Southampton taking the points with a 4 - 0 win which moved them into equal second in the league.
Selfless running by Bex Sharr created the opening for Julia Fabrizi to hit a cross to the far post where Jo Edmondson collected and deposited the ball into the net. Jo Knight then collected two. The first coming courtesy of a short corner cross from Sue Crowley to Fabrizi, who's shot was padded out to Knight who flicked the ball high into the net. Her second was also from a SC when she fired inside the post.
Southampton's fourth followed some good individual work by Naomi Dunn, who made space for a reverse stick shot into the bottom corner. It was by no means one way traffic as Southampton's keeper Linda Dunham was called upon to make several last ditch saves to keep Southampton ahead. League position 2nd equal.

Sporting several youngsters the Seconds took the initiative against Eastleigh when Kathryn Raw opened the scoring with an individual effort. Eastleigh were back on even terms within minutes. Southampton again moved ahead when Sophie Mitchell made it 2 - 1 just before half time. Eastleigh's greater experience showed when they equalised and then went ahead from two Allie Burrow's short corners late in the game. Final score 2 - 3. League position 9th.
Congratulations to Helen Featherstone who became engaged recently.

The Thirds had hoped for three points as they peppered the Farnborough goal for the first half but failed to capitalise on their possession. Southampton took the lead through Sue Quinton from the penalty spot and then missed the opportunity to go further ahead when awarded a second penalty, which the keeper saved. Farnborough equalised early in the second half and almost had all the points but a Charlotte Page save at a penalty stroke left honours even at 1 - 1. League position 3rd.

Having gained promotion to Division Three the Fourth team has lost several key players and are finding life difficult at the higher level. This week they met with Andover, who were relegated into Division three, and lost 1 - 5. Sarah Russell getting the consolation goal. League position 9th.

The Fifths were down to eight players for this game owing to unavailability and illness but were not daunted by travelling to Gosport. A Sain Glaze goal from a SC rebound and some sterling work by teenage keeper Louise Jeffcoate gave Southampton the points to keep them riding high in Division six. League position 2nd.

Men

A Kelvin Wyatt goal set the First team off to a good start against high flyers Fleet but a dubious penalty stroke saw Fleet back on even terms just after half time. A second within a minute saw Southampton with their backs to the wall, and chasing the equaliser, suffered a further set back to lose 1 - 3. League position 8th.

The Seconds had a great start when Jasdeep Singh dipped his shot over the stranded Old Whitgiftians' keeper following a John Freckleton run and cross. Further opportunities offered themselves but were not converted but this good result moves them away from the dangerous foot of the table. League position 7th.

With a comprehensive performance the Threes outplayed Basingstoke Brewers. Skipper Mark Day showed the way when he opened the scoring from close range. Pete Cox (the only forward to score) got number two. A short corner strike from Ed Matthews made it 3 - 0 just after half time. Basingstoke grabbed one back but a final flurry saw Southampton's Mike Woods make it 4 - 1 at the final whistle. League position 3rd.

Ed Thorn continued his fine scoring record as he notched up four individual goals in the 5 - 0 win over Andover. Colin Langridge celebrating his thirtieth birthday with number five. League position 5th.

Fifth's report to follow

The 6XI played Andover 4s at Andover and went behind to two opportunistic strikes one in the first half and one in the second, despite the valiant attempts of keeper Paul Newman.
Southampton played good attacking hockey, which produced some early chances but unfortunately for Southampton, went awry. Could it have been to do with the ungodly 10.30 pushback! However after the break relentless pressure on the Andover goal saw Southampton profit when a through ball by Adam Knight was received by Julian Powis who's shot earned a penalty corner. From the resulting corner a good lay off by Paul Smith saw Geoff Ingram slot him his second of the season. The equaliser came from another penalty corner and was dummied by Adam Knight at the top of the circle for Pete Jones to fire it back in for Julian Powis to deflect it int the keepers left post.… League position 3rd.

The Vets came home victorious from Basingstoke, where they defeated Basingstoke Vets 2 - 0. Mo Kenth, returning from injury opened the scoring to lead at HT. Keith Finch made it 2 - 0. A fine team performance, skipper Keith Wyatt is quoted as saying.

The Masters were unable to reverse their bad run of results against London sides, losing 1 - 4 to Barnes. Mike Barnfield scoring for Southampton.

The Otters also had a bad weekend as they fell to Isle of White 5 - 3. League position 9th.
