The first eleven game was postponed.
The seconds, still looking for their first points of the season, had a daunting task playing Trojans, who had previously beaten the Thirds. Southampton played with a renewed belief in themselves as they strung together a good team effort, taking the lead when Nicky Le Bas forced the ball over the Trojans' goal line after twenty minutes. In the second half Trojans changed tactics which brought them a short corner and Cornick hit her shot low into the corner. Charlotte Page, promoted from the Thirds made two excellent saves to keep the game even at full time. New Skipper Maggs Ingram was pleased at the teams renewed fervour and is looking for it to continue into the remainder of the season. Final score 1 - 1.
The Thirds continued their good start to the season with a 0 - 0 draw with Winchester first team. Indeed had it not been for the post and a goal line stop from the Winchester keeper Southampton could have had a comfortable 2 - 0 lead at half time. The second half belonged to Winchester as their superior fitness started to show but Southampton debutante keeper, Lucy Patey brought off a great reaction save late in the game to keep a clean sheet.
The fourths and Fifths both suffered from late drop outs and travelled to Portsmouth and Petersfield short of players. The Fourths found Charlotte Leatham on spectacular form as she scored three. Two with runs from the half way line and one from close range. Mary-Anne Mulligan adding number four in the 4 - 1 victory.
The Fifths introduced teenage goal keeper Louise Jeffcoate to her first senior game of hockey and although she was not called upon too often, she showed her potential by making several good saves through out the match. Mean while the forwards were running wild with Helen Carter netting four, Mary Aicken, two and Sabrina Black one in the 7 - 0 win. This result keeping the fifths high in the table.
Chris Stokes could not believe his bad luck as he watched defenders appear from nowhere to stop two certain goals on the line. Southampton continued pressure throughout the game should have brought just rewards but Aldershot and Farnham soaked up the Southampton attack and relied on the counter attack to threaten Southampton's goal. A tactic that brought its rewards as they went on to win 2 - 0.
The seconds were on song when they met with Bournemouth as they kept their Dorset opponents trailing for much of the game. Southampton always staying one goal ahead with Bournemouth fighting back to even terms until late in the game when a Southampton spurt saw them move to 5 - 3 and win the game.
Southampton Thirds and Fourths both entertained Basingstoke sides. The Thirds winning conclusively 4 - 0 with Neil Harber netting two, one from a short corner and one from open play. Stewart Magee and Robin Martin (narrow angle) being the other scorers. The Fourths were made to work harder for their points, with the winner coming late in the game. Final score 3-2, scorers Greg Jones, Colin Langridge and Mike Woods.
Southampton 5ths started well against Chichester Health's 2s, producing some good
play. This led to Mike Foulds, Rich Harran and Mark Cozens scoring goals to end the
first half three nil up.
The second half was much the same, with more excellent play. Southampton dominated
the game. This led to Wil Ferguson and Chris Dunn scoring to make it
5 - 0 before Chichester Health reduced the lead by scoring a late consolation goal.
The Otters and sixth elevenths both had miserable days as they leaked seven goals each against Bournemouth 4s and Fordingbridge 3s respectively. The Otters game was one way traffic as Bournemouth surged forward at will whereas the sixth kept their score at 3 - 4 down at half time before giving way.
The Veterans opened the scoring against local rivals Trojans through Chris Jones before succumbing to an onslaught of eight goals before Pete Terry made it a final score of 2 - 8.
Richmond had trouble getting the whole team to the pitch on time but did not have trouble finding the net against the Masters, moving two up with only nine players on the pitch. However, as is often the case, Southampton found it easier to deal with a full team holding the score to 2 - 0 at the final whistle.
Hampshire Under 18 boys continued their good run in the County Championship as they destroyed Surrey 6 - 2 and Sussex 3 - 0. Dan Andrews [4], Tim Davenport [3], Sam Drury and Andy Galliers scoring. Good performances from Allie Brown, Tim Davenport, Ross Turnbull and keeper Greg Hitchins.
Hampshire Under 16s were not as lucky. After dominating against Sussex they failed to make the most of their scoring chances the went down 2 - 1 and then by the odd goal against Surrey.
