Southampton travelled to play West Witney in torrential rain and returned home pointless, losing 1 - 0. Southampton's failure to maximise on scoring opportunities, in a game they dominated for long periods, was their down fall. . Witney took the lead after 27 minutes when a well-worked corner was successfully converted into a goal. They could have gone 2 up when a doubtful penalty was awarded on half time, but a diving save from the keeper, Linda Dunham, pushed the ball onto the post and harmlessly away. Such was Southampton dominance in the second half that Dunham was only called upon to make one save whilst the Witney keeper was kept busy with a string of short corners. Southampton should have gone level two minutes from time but Bex Sharr's shot was blocked on the line by a lonely Witney defender.
The seconds were however in much more buoyant mood after their game with Southampton University. Karen Jordan opened the scoring when she received a pass from Allie Omell, took one touch to control and then rocketed the ball into the roof of the net from the top of the D. Jenny Kimber added the second when she spun and shot following her run into the left side of the D. University gained their goal late in the game.
Southampton Thirds skipper, Jill Stokes was delighted with their 5 - 3 win over Gregarians first team. Southampton looked slick in the first half and quickly went into a 5 - 0 lead, with goals coming from Nicky Thomas (2), Helen Featherstone, Suzanne Quinton and Annie Day. However Gregarians came back into the game in the second half, scoring their three. Nicky Thomas just missed out on a hat-trick when her penalty was saved.
The fourths, without skipper Deidre Leahan Matthews, showed their teamwork when they met with City of Portsmouth 4 - 0. Lyn Price, Di Childs, Charlotte Leathem and Alex Williams scoring. Hope you are well soon De.
The Fifths had teenager Amy White to thank for their points when she score against highly placed Basingstoke fourths to win 1 - 0. Skipper Sian Glaze was pleased the way her young side battled resiliently against the gale force conditions.
In case anybody would like to contact Debbie Walker I now have an email address for her in Wales where she is helping to build teams of managers. She would like to hear from any of her old friends. Contact me for details.
Sidelined skipper, Ben Fitch was please with his reshaped side when they met with, second in the table, Wimborne. Steve Perkins moving into midfield showed control and conducted the game whilst Richard Watts was stepping into and successfully contributing to a variety of positions throughout the game. Paul Eastwood opened the scoring when his short corner shot found the net. Kelvin Wyatt at his sparkling best added the second before Wimborne pulled one back at half time. Welsh under 16, Rhobet Williams, playing his first senior game, then added the third and Peter Spencer the fourth before Wimborne added their second.
Seconds game off
The Thirds went one down to Winchester before bouncing back to go 2 - 1 up thanks to an open play goal from Luke Knight and then a penalty from Rob Sparrow. However loose marking led to Winchester going level and then grabbing the winner five minutes from time. Final score 2 - 3. At their fines evening the thirds held court for some 1.5 hours dressed in obligatory shorts (swimwear), jacket and tie. Very entertaining. Good luck to fines chairman, Mark Day who is to have a small operation on his leg shortly.
Fourths game off.
Will Ferguson grabbed the solitary Southampton goal as the fourths went down 1 - 2 to Trojans. See the full report here.
Petersfield seconds proved too strong for the sixth eleven as they won 0 - 5.
The vets were in a strong 3 - 1 lead when their game with Basingstoke was abandoned 13 minutes from time with Pete Terry getting all Southampton's goals.
The Masters went down 1 - 3 to a strong Surbiton side with...
The Otters took an early lead against Winchester 6s when Matt Swzinto struck the ball home. Winchester pressed hard but Southampton worked hard to deny any simple chances.
The under 19 girls second team enjoyed a 5 - 0 win over Winchester in a game not reflective of the result. Scorers for Southampton were Sophie Mitchell, Vicky Nutt, Beth Davies, Laura Please and Emma Winstone.
Meanwhile the under 14 girls were drawing 1 - 1 with Winchester 14s with Ellie Foster scoring.
The under 18 boys were in fine form as they piled in 6 against Wimborne with Chris Stokes (4), James Millar and Rob Martin scoring. Final score 6 - 1.
Congratulations to the following under 13 boys who have progressed to the
next round of County trials:
James Please, Will Thomson, Robert O'Brien, Will Legge, David Stokes and
Ollie Knight.
Condolences to those who did not make it, better luck next time.
Anyone need an indian : Ollie Knight played one in his school production of 'Annie get Your Gun' and very good he was too. Hannah Pearce (under 19 girls) was a star in the same production. Well done both of you.
It must have been a record. Some 16 teams of 4/5 players entered the quiz night (some of the regulars were missing as well). An enjoyable evening, where the German/Jarman family were in fine form to take the first prize. Keeping up the table was a team comprising Mike Loveless, Luke Knight and others. The heads or tails final was taken by Steve Glennie, whose prize money will, I am assured be eaten up by first eleven fines.
