The second eleven were in exuberant mood after finding their goal scoring touch against Middleton and Bognor. In an open game both sides were determined to chase goals but it was Southampton who found it easier. Hat tricks from Liz Walker and Jenny Kimber, were supported by two from Nicki Le Bas, two from Kay Whittingham and one from overlapping defender, Becky Mortimer to make a final score of 11 - 0.
The thirds were also in goal hungry mood when they met with an experienced Chichester Vets who held their own for most of the first half but tired legs eventually gave way to the Southampton youngsters’ onslaught as they ran out 8 - 0 winners. Goals coming from Anna Skelton (2), Clare Butcher (2), Suzanne Quinton and a hat trick from Becky Thornton. One goal of note was when Anna Skelton, when faced with a one on one with the keeper, casually sold her the dummy and stepped around her to hit the ball into the empty net
The fourths travelled to Middleton and Bognor and introduced junior players Katie Grange and Sophie Mitchell. The youngsters had a nervous start but soon settled down to make their mark on the game as Southampton went on to win 5 - 1, with goals from Karina Christiansen (2) Lyn Price, Maria Blake and Amy White
The fifths had Charlotte Gallagher (normally central defender) guesting in goal in this friendly with Andover. They drew 2-2 with goals from Natasha Hart and Charlotte Page.
The first team quickly moved one ahead in their game at Petersfield and looked to be in full control. However Petersfield took advantage of playing the long ball and broke to force four goals and eventually won 1 - 4.
Although the final score was a convincing 6 - 0 win over local rivals Old Edwardians for Southampton seconds, it took several good saves from keeper Paul Howarth to keep OEs out in the early stages. Danny Roche celebrated his return with a hat trick with other goals coming from Chris Stokes, Rhobet Williams and Pete Graham.
The thirds had an evening fixture with Poole but did not let the changing light affect their game as they returned 5 - 0 winners.
The fourths lost an exciting match with Fareham 1 - 2 with Ed Thorn getting Southampton’s goal.
In the Hampshire open league cup there was an exciting match between Southampton fifths and Southampton Otters. The Otters took a controlling lead in the first half and looked to be running out comfortable winners with the score standing at 3 - 1 ten minutes into the second half. However a Colin Langridge hat trick (for the second week running in this event) and goals from Michael Foulds (who helped set up others) and Tony Heaton pulled the game level at 5 - 5 by the end of full time. Robin Martin (2) Robert O’Brien, Henry Swzinto and Ali Brown scoring for the Otters. A tense penalty shoot out ensued with the Otters edging home 3 - 2.
The Masters met with a power packed Richmond side fielding at least two former England internationals and did well to hold them for 25 minutes of the first half. Richmond took a two goal lead before Southampton’s Paul Meacher pulled the score back to 1 - 2 at half time. However Richmond continued to make inroads into Southampton’s defence and finished 1 - 5 winners.
The senior vets had better fortunes as they met with local opposition, Trojans. Southampton took a three goal lead thanks to some good passing and quick fired action inside the D. Early goals coming from Robin Meacher, Geoff Ingram and Martin Wood. Trojans grabbed one back through Gordon Small before Southampton move ahead again through Bill Stokes and Geoff Ingram. Small then added a late consolation to make the final score 5 - 2 to Southampton. Smiles all round in the bar.
The sixth team also moved into the next round of the cup by beating Guildford 2 - 1 with Chris Thomson and Veal scoring.
On Sunday the under 16 boys went down 7 - 0 to a very slick Winchester side.
In the girls Under 19 league Southampton’s first team, stretched with absences at county, had the better of the first half but fought a strong rear guard action in the second for a 0 - 0 draw. Leah Thorneywell, the Southampton goalkeeper had an outstanding match.
The seconds faired better as they beat a young Gosport side 3 - 0 with Amanda Royle, Hannah Pearce and Avni Sheath scoring.
Hampshire under 18 girls beat Kent 5 - 4 with Hollie Nutt and Alex Williams getting on the scoresheet.
The under 16 side had a 3 - 0 victory over Kent’s under 16s.
Southampton mixed team enjoyed a game with Swanage, winning 4 - 0 with Sue Adams moving into midfield and helping to set up two of the Southampton goals. Scorers were Karina Christiansen (2), Bex Sharr and Mark Day.
