Report for Weekend 14th October 2000

Ladies

A disappointingly match for the first team against Maidenhead losing 2 - 0. The first half was balanced with Maidenhead’s young, energetic players working hard to close down Southampton’s opportunities. However in the 28th minute Southampton were awarded a penalty stroke for a deliberate foot on the goal line. Unfortunately Fiona Jarman’s flick hit the post and rebounded to safety. In the second half greater Maidenhead forward pressure resulted in a scrambled goal being scored in the fortieth minute. A second was added 10 minutes later after Linda Dunham had made two saves in succession. Southampton pushed players forward to exert greater pressure on the Maidenhead defence but could not find the final strike at goal.

The Second team entertained local rivals Trojans` second and introduced Charlotte Page in goal. The team worked well together with a final result of a 1- 1 draw. Trojans took the lead but continued pressure from the Southampton forwards resulted in Liz Walker scoring the equaliser. Excellent result on which to build the season

The Third team met with City of Portsmouth second team and were thankful for goals from the Kelly Brinkler, Helen Featherstone and Becky Thornton. The game started evenly with both sides forcing defences to work hard but Southampton eventually took the initiative and went on to win 3 - 1.

The Fourths dominated the match with Fordingbridge, who had been relegated last season, but could not find the net despite their territorial advantage. A breakaway goal by Fordingbridge midway through the second half saw Southampton lose 1 - 0.

The Fifths overwhelmed Petersfield 6-0 with a fine team performance. Goals coming from Karina Christiansen, Anna Greaves, Lynwen Phillips [2], Kath Harley and Jo Marsh. A good start for Lynwen on her first appearance for the club.
