Club History

Southampton Hockey Club has been running in one form or another since 1938. At that time it was a ladies only club. In 1948, Old Tauntonians Hockey club was formed by the old boys of Tauntons School (now Tauntons College).

1976 saw the start of the Southampton International Hockey Tournament, which ran successfully for 26 years.

In 1982 the two clubs began to use the same club house in Highfield, and five years later in 1987 they began training as one, and started up a junior section.

In 1989, Southampton Women's Hockey Club became partners in the Old Tauntonians Sports Club, leading to the establishment of a joint social calendar the following year.  The year after, in 1991, Southampton Women's Hockey Club took the decision to change their club colours to the same as Old Tauntonians.

1993 was a busy year for both clubs. Old Tauntonians changed their name to Southampton Tauntonians Hockey Club to reflect the club’s broader membership base, comprising members both from the old school and the larger Southampton population. Joint negotiations began for the purchase of the lease for the 'Pub in the Park' (now known as the Sporting View) as a new on-site clubhouse. The building offered potential not only a clubhouse but also as a business opportunity, providing services to the public using Southampton Outdoor Sports Centre (which itself offers football, cricket, netball, bowls, skiing, cycling, tennis, and hockey to the population of Southampton).

In 1994 Southampton Tauntonians Hockey Club took the decision to drop “Tauntonians” from their name, so that hockey in Southampton was now provided under the corporate name of Southampton Hockey Club.
1996 saw the takeover of the Pub in the Park by the combined force of Southampton Hockey, Bowls and Netball and renamed the Sporting View.

In 2000 the astroturf pitches at the Sports Centre were relaid for the Millennium Games and all hockey matches and training were moved from the old grass pitches to these.

In 2005 Southampton Women's Hockey Club and Southampton Men’s Hockey Club formally joined forces as Southampton Hockey Club, after over a decade of training and socializing together.

Southampton Hockey Club is now one of the largest and highly regarded clubs in Hampshire, fielding 9 senior men’s and 5 senior ladies teams on a weekly basis along with boys’ and girls’ teams from 6 upwards.
